Dr. Persing was a valued member of our CVM community and the Class of 1984. Her contributions to the college and the profession of veterinary medicine have made a lasting impact. She will continue to be remembered fondly and missed dearly.

Obituary

Dr. Susan Maine Persing, of Blue Ridge, Va., passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital with her family at her side. Susie, was born in Mount Holly, N.J., on July 30, 1957. She and her family moved to Charlottesville, Va., in 1958. Susie graduated from Albemarle High School in 1975 with honors and then acquired her degree from Virginia Tech in Animal Science. She was a member of the first graduating class of the Virginia Tech Veterinary School in 1984. Susie was preceded in death by her grandparents, Reuben and Elizabeth Maine, Louise Bishop and Joseph Boston. Susie is survived by her husband, Carl Persing; two sons, Ramsey Persing, of Roanoke, and Trevor Persing an fiancée, Lenae Shaver, of Lynchburg; parents, Nancy and Reuben Maine, of Charlottesville; three brothers and their wives, Richard and Trindel Maine, of Palmdale, Calif., John and Demmie Maine, of Charlottesville, and Robert and Janet Maine, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Susie is also survived by her sisters-in-law and their husbands, Pam and Mark Hammock, and Donna Persing and Jim Quarforth; her nephews and nieces, Anna Hammock, Altair, Rigel and Deneb Maine, Emmalee, Daniel and Rebecca Maine, and Abbie, Libby, Mathew and Frannie Maine. Susie always had a passion for animals. She grew up riding and competing in horse shows in the Charlottesville area. She also had a passion for large dogs and loved Dobermans. She was a practicing Veterinarian for Blue Ridge Animal Hospital in Bedford, Va. Susie was a Virginia Tech Fan, and she, her husband, sons and other family members all graduated from Virginia Tech. She particularly enjoyed friends, family, books and warm sunny days at Smith Mountain lake. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Oakey's East Chapel with Pastor David Fraser officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Campus Crusade for Christ, P.O.
